PROFILE

WILLIAM BEST, MD

In 1947, Dr. Best graduated from the medical school at University of Illinois, Chicago. During his career, Dr. Best has held positions in the Veterans Administration and in academic medicine. He headed the Midwest Research Support Center at Hines Hospital in the late 1960s and early 1970s. From 1972 to 1981 he held the appointment of Associate Dean of the University of Illinois College of Medicine. During the same time period (1975-1981), he also was the Chief of Staff of the University of Illinois Hospital in Chicago. In 1981-1992, Dr. Best returned to the Department of Veterans Affairs and worked as Chief of Staff of Hines VA Hospital. Since his retirement from his Chief of Staff position, Dr. Best has worked as a Senior Research Associate in Research Service, Health Services Research and Development. While a member of the HSR&D center, Dr. Best has studied On-Line Monitors for Surgical Morbidity and Mortality, Testing Logistic Regression Equations as Indicators of Quality Care, Recruitment, Retention, and Compensation of VA versus Non-VA Physicians and Dentists.
