PROFILE
NICHOLAS J. GROSS, M.D., Ph.D.
Few researchers in medicine have made such significant contributions to both basic and to clinical research as Dr. Nicholas Gross, a VA Staff Physician in Pulmonary Medicine and a Professor of Medicine at Loyola University's School of Medicine. Dr. Gross is renowned for his investigations detailing the mechanisms and treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), in the molecular structure and properties of pulmonary surfactant – which aids in preventing lung collapse; and for providing remarkable insights into airway physiology and its function. He has also conducted dozens of clinical trials that have helped make many new pharmacological agents available to our veterans and have been key to transferring research results from the laboratory bench to the patient’s bedside. Dr. Gross is currently a member of the Pulmonary and Allergy Advisory Board of the US Food and Drug Administration, and he also serves on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. He is the author of 114 peer-reviewed journal articles, 4 books, and 30 book chapters.
