STEPHEN SONTAG, MD
Dr. Stephen Sontag has conducted more than 100 clinical trials involving more than 6,000 patients, thus qualifying him as one of this country's most accomplished research gastroenterologists. He has followed many of his Veteran patients for more than 20 years. This long-term relationship reflects a remarkable cooperative spirit between Dr. Sontag and his patients, and has provided the VA with a one-of-a-kind and invaluable resource for understanding the outcomes of chronic gastric disorders and their treatments. Dr. Sontag is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) and of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. As an AGA Fellow, he has led or participated in the Society's Committees on Research, FDA Concerns, Patient Care, and Public Relations. His research focuses are: Early detection and prevention of colorectal cancer; Barrett's esophagus and adenocarcinoma of the esophagus; the relationship between Gastroesophageal reflux and pulmonary disease; Gastric and duodenal ulcer and the role of H. pylori.
