CARES Mission

Dedicated to Improving the Health and Health Care of
United States Military Veterans through Medical Research and Education

 

Overview

The Chicago Association for Research and Education in Science (CARES) is a non-profit organization associated with the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital, the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center, the William S. Middleton Memorial VA Hospital and the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center. It is dedicated to research and its associated educational and scientific endeavors and complements the care of patients by enhancing the intellectual viability of the hospital and providing new and innovative treatments.

The strength of CARES lies in its ability to understand and quickly respond to the unique needs of the research community. CARES is especially useful to investigators in the hiring of clinical research coordinators, research assistants or other personnel, purchasing equipment or supplies and managing travel funds.

CARES attempts to be as flexible and non-restrictive as possible, while meeting its obligations as a non-profit organization. The Board of Directors consists of individuals with an extensive background in health care and research.

Clinical Research

CARES supports investigators who have conducted hundreds of clinical trials in a variety of therapeutic areas. Our affiliated medical centers and their investigators have the experience and resources to perform clinical drug trials in animal models as well as inpatient and outpatient pre-clinical, Phase I, II, III, and IV trials and outcomes research.

CARES' annual revenue is in excess of $5 million from a wide range of sources including: National Institutes for Health; Department of Defense; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; Illinois Department of Public Health; Illinois Neurofibromatosis, Inc.; Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness; American Lung Association; American Cancer Society; American Heart Association; American Diabetes Association; Arthritis Foundation; Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation; National Multiple Sclerosis Society; Lyme Disease Association; Bayer Corporation; Pfizer, Inc.; Janssen Pharmaceutical; Abbott Laboratories; Merck & Co.; Eli Lilly; Novartis Pharmaceuticals; Presutti Laboratories; Exact Sciences; Roche Laboratories; Watson Laboratories; GlaxoSmithKline; and others.

 


Patient Base

Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital, Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center, and William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital, are three of a group of seven VA medical centers that comprise the VA Great Lakes Health Care System dedicated to providing a comprehensive health care package to America's Veterans.

Hines VA Hospital is a primary referral center for the Midwest. Specialized clinical programs include Blind Rehabilitation, Spinal Cord Injury, Neurosurgery, Radiation Therapy and Cardiovascular Surgery. It currently operates 483 beds, including extended care, surgical and medical intensive care, spinal cord injury, blind rehabilitation, psychiatry and substance abuse treatment.

Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center is a first-of-its-kind partnership between the U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense (DoD), integrating all medical care into a federal health care facility with a single combined VA and Navy mission.  Lovell provides a full spectrum of health care for its patients, including full medical and surgical care, a large array of medical sub-specialties (cardiology, pulmonary, neurology, etc,), a variety of mental health services (acute and long-term care, post-traumatic stress disorder, homeless domiciliary care, alcohol/drug rehab, etc.), Community Living Center, as well as many other programs, at their campus in North Chicago, Illinois.

William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital provides tertiary medical, surgical, neurological, and psychiatric care, and a full range of outpatient services.  It currently includes 85 acute care beds, 18 residential rehabilitation beds and 26 beds in its community living center for sub-acute transitional, rehabilitation and hospice care.   

The Jesse Brown VA Medical Center consists of a 200-bed acute care facility and four community based outpatient clinics (CBOCs). Jesse Brown VAMC provides care to approximately 62,000 enrolled veterans who reside in the City of Chicago and Cook County, Illinois, and in four counties in northwestern Indiana.
