PROFILE
Gwendolyn Kartje, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Gwendolyn Kartje is a Neurologist at Hines VA Hospital and an Associate Professor of Neurology and Associate Professor of Cell Biology, Neurobiology and Anatomy at Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine. In addition to caring for Veteran patients, she is widely recognized for her research in neuro-regeneration and
neuronal plasticity. Her pioneering research examines the damage caused by brain injury, in particular stroke in the aging brain and explores treatments to improve functional recovery by encouraging the growth of new neuro-pathways. She is especially interested in how the brain attempts to recover after injury or stroke and how to facilitate the recovery process. Her efforts are at the forefront of research in Neurology in the VA and the country. She has been nationally recognized for those efforts by her peers and was named a VA Research Career Development Awardee in 1998-2001. She has published numerous articles on this subject in scientific and clinical journals.
